St John of God College of Health Sciences conducted its 12th congregation graduation on 25th March 2021 for the award of Degrees and Diplomas by the Vice-Chancellor of Mzuzu University and Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi.
The graduation ceremony theme was: “The Great Push: Investing in Mental and Physical Health in a Changing World”
The college had 89 graduands (47 males, 44 females) who received academic awards as follows:
- University Diploma in Nursing – RN 58 (30 Males, 28 Females)
- Bachelor of Science Clinical Medicine Mental Health 17 (11 Males, 6 Females)
- Bachelor of Science Mental Health – Psychiatric Nursing 14 (6 Males, 8 Females)
Saint John of God College of Health Sciences has a long history of training mental health personnel since 2003. It is one of the health professionals training colleges under the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM). The College has undergone several developments in academic as well as infrastructure since its establishment.
Saint John of God College of Health Sciences is situated in the Mzuzu City North of Malawi. The college is under the proprietorship of the Saint John of God Hospitaller Ministries of the Catholic Church. The college admits students from all regions of the country on merit regardless of their religious affiliations and tribe. It also admits students from the surrounding countries.
The College, through excellence in teaching and learning environment, trains and inspires students in the health profession into Saint John of God core values of hospitality, compassion, respect, justice and excellence. It exists to provide quality and holistic teaching, learning and research in the manner of Saint John of God. Our graduates are prepared to serve at all levels of healthcare delivery system at a Health Centre, District Hospital and Central Hospital.
Currently the College is offering four academic programmes namely: University Diploma in Nursing (Registered Nurse), University Diploma in Psychosocial Counselling, Bachelor of Sciences in Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine Mental Health. Diploma in Psychosocial Counselling and Bachelor of Science in Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing are both affiliated to The University of Malawi, and Diploma in Nursing (RN) and Bachelor of Science Clinical Medicine Mental Health are affiliated to Mzuzu University.
Currently, the college has 211 students. The college uses Mzuzu Central, Chitipa, Karonga, Rumphi, Mzimba, Nkhata Bay, Nkhotakota, Salima and Kasungu District Hospitals, Mzuzu Health Centre, Saint John of God House of Hospitality both Lilongwe and Mzuzu, Zomba Mental Hospital, Mzuzu Prison for clinical practice.
Our Counselling students use Mzuzu Prison, Marymount Secondary School, St. Peters Secondary School and other schools in Mzuzu for their counselling practicums.
The college plans to introduce the following new programmes: Bachelor of Arts in Psychosocial Counselling, University Certificate in Midwifery, Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery, Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine and Mental Health (Generic).
