Saint John of God Hospitaller Services


Founded in 1997, Umoza Children’s Program works with children operating in and on the streets of Mzuzu City. The program aims to promote rehabilitation, well being and holistic development of children through identification, assessment, psycho-social support, repatriation, reconciliation with families, school placement follow up including a variety recreation & sports.

Since September 2007 Umoza program has been working in collaboration with Kindernothilfe e.V. of Germany to improve quality of life among the children and households.

The project’s areas of emphasis are:

  Basic Education and Prevocational Skills
  Health, hygiene, self image and esteem
  Temporary accommodation and repatriation of children from distant areas
  Behavioural Change
  Improvement of household livelihoods
  Positive parenting for Guardians
  Individual counselling
  Recreation & Sports

The project operates four centres within the city of Mzuzu;  Masasa, Kaviwale and Ching’ambo Outreach Centres land the Drop in Centre that is located at St John of God Centre in the city.

Achievements include:

  High enrolment in schools
  Improved hygiene and health among children
  Very good performance in sporting activities
  Great reduction in the number of children operating in and on Mzuzu City's strrets
  Formation of a cultural dance troupe
  Recording Radio Program on Child Rights using Child Parliament model for Malawi   Umoza Cultural Dance Troupe
